VicUrban today announced the appointment of Grocon to develop the State Government's new office building in central Dandenong.
The building will be one of the first developments delivered on land acquired by VicUrban as part of the Revitalising Central Dandenong initiative, the State's largest urban renewal project since Melbourne Docklands.
When completed in the second half of 2011, the Government building will provide 14,100 square metres of office space for the Department of Human Services, Department of Justice, Department of Planning and Community Development and Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.
The development itself will help to stimulate local employment, services and supply. Most importantly, the community will have better access to key public services.
VicUrban's CEO, Pru Sanderson, said the announcement demonstrated the State Government's $290 million investment in Revitalising Central Dandenong was creating new private sector opportunities within this important Central Activities District.
“VicUrban is delivering the improved infrastructure and new land parcels that will build on Dandenong's strengths and rekindle it as the heart of Melbourne's south-east,” Ms Sanderson said.
“The fact that Grocon has seen fit to invest in Dandenong is evidence that the work undertaken by VicUrban and Council - in consultation with the local community - is creating viable commercial development opportunities; the likes of which have not been seen here for many years,” she said.
Construction works are expected to commence in early 2010.
VicUrban, in partnership with the City of Greater Dandenong, is delivering the Revitalising Central Dandenong initiative on behalf of the State Government.
The State Government has committed funding of up to $19 million to the Government office project. Ernst & Young has assessed the project and anticipate it will generate $85 million for the economy of this region. It is also anticipated that more than 400 full time employment positions for the region will be created during construction.
Grocon's General Manager - Developments, Carolyn Viney, said Grocon was very proud to be delivering a landmark building under the Revitalising Central Dandenong initiative.
“The project co-locates five different State Government departments into a single, high quality, purpose built office building of approximately 14,100m2 A-grade building space,” Ms Viney said.
“The building is consistent with Grocon's sustainability platform and is expected to become an instant landmark that sets a high standard for all new buildings that follow in the Revitalising Central Dandenong initiative.
“The State Government's commitment to Revitalising Central Dandenong gives us confidence that our building will be one of many to come,” Ms Viney said.
Grocon was selected following a competitive tender process.
The Revitalising Central Dandenong initiative aims to attract more than $1 billion of private investment over the next 15 to 20 years and to restore Dandenong as the capital of Melbourne's south-east.
