Preparations for new construction activity in central Dandenong

VicUrban is commencing preparatory works to make way for new buildings and a new street as part of the Revitalising Central Dandenong initiative.

Between now and end November the site located at 139-157 Thomas Street will be cleared, with the former Grand International building to be demolished.

Once cleared, a portion of this site will be used for the previously-announced Government Services Building, for which construction is expected to commence in the new year.

The remainder of the 1900m² site will become part of the future 'City Street' - a new street linking the Dandenong Station precinct to the heart of central Dandenong.

VicUrban is also demolishing the disused timber building on the corner of Robinson and George streets, in preparation for City Street's future construction.

VicUrban's Development Director, Michael King, said the preparatory works needed to occur now so that future construction activity could proceed quickly when it commences.

“By preparing various VicUrban-owned sites around central Dandenong we are moving closer to the construction of new buildings and infrastructure that will increase the city's accessibility and attractiveness to the community, business and visitors,” Mr King said.

“VicUrban staff have spoken to nearby property owners to brief them on the upcoming site clearance works and indicative construction timeframes,” he said.

In addition to site clearance works, VicUrban is also making changes to George Street to allow for the installation of new telecommunications infrastructure. These changes include removing a small number of trees, which will be replaced when works in that area are completed next year.

Throughout the coming months VicUrban will be clearing more sites in preparation for delivering the vision outlined in the Revitalising Central Dandenong Urban Master Plan.

VicUrban staff will continue to liaise with all nearby property owners to inform them of likely dates for future site clearance works.
