Lonsdale Street, the heart of Central Dandenong, has celebrated a major milestone in its evolution to become one of Melbourne's great boulevards.
Planning Minister, Justin Madden, together with local traders on Lonsdale Street, celebrated the commencement of major works with an official sod-turn. The event marked the culmination of significant planning and preparatory works for the transformation of begin.
Pru Sanderson, VicUrban's CEO, said the start of works meant a lot more than its visual aspect. "Lonsdale Street will transform the geographical divide of Central Dandenong to open up a vibrant city that is accessible and attractive to the community, business and visitors."
"Importantly, it's the local community's input we sought that helped to create the vision for Lonsdale Street. It's their history, local culture and identity with their city that will put the heart and soul back into Central Dandenong."
It is anticipated that the renewal of Lonsdale Street will be complete in late 2010.
We'll continue to provide regular updates on the project at this site.
